A-Z guideThis section of our website is the A-Z guide to all the important things about how our school operates!
A phone call or note is required when children are absent from school. We will ring and check shortly after 9.00 am if we have not been notified. If children arrive after 8.55 am they must come to the office and get a late pass to give to their teacher. Minor bumps or scratches receive first aid treatment in the school's medical room. In more serious cases, we will contact you immediately. Please keep the school informed of any changes of work, mobile or home phone numbers as well as other contacts in case we are unable get hold of you. If your child requires specific medication during school hours, we prefer that they receive this type of medication from a parent, or at home. Our children are collected by shuttle van at 2.50 pm for after school care, held at Miramar Community Centre from 3pm. For more information, contact Cathie Goldsack, East Care After 3 Inc, on Class-led assemblies are usually held at 2.20 pm every second Thursday. The Newsletter diary and Website Calendar show the schedule for these. Parents are most welcome. School students are encouraged to join our weekly banking programme. We have Mahutonga students who are trained as tellers. They are supported by the National Bank in Kilbirnie. Come along to the library at 8.20 am on a Tuesday morning to find out about how your child can join or contact the school office. If they already bank at the National Bank they can bank at school on a Tuesday in the same way, they just need to bring their bank book and money! Worser Bay School does not have a uniform. A dark blue school logo T-shirt is required for all years 4 and above, to wear when representing the school at sporting events. Other clothing and bags with the school logo are available for purchase. These are not compulsory. Order forms are available in the school office. Our children attend the dental clinic at Miramar Central School. Children are checked at school. If treatment is required then parents are asked to make their own arrangements to take children down to the dental clinic. Earthquake and fire drill procedures are practised regularly. In the event of a civil emergency, children are kept at school under supervision until they are collected by parents or an authorised adult. In the case of emergency evacuation of the school, the school will assemble at Miramar Central School or the polo ground (the grounds next to Miramar Central School). Worser Bay School is zoned. A map of the Home Zone is available here. We appreciate being advised well in advance if you are intending to enrol your child. This helps us with our planning. For new entrants, the school requires a birth certificate and an immunisation certificate to be sighted when enrolment forms are completed. Health and Special Education Services We have access to the regular services of the Public Health Nurse, Speech Therapist, School Psychologist and Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour. Children's vision and hearing are professionally checked at intervals throughout their time at Worser Bay School. The school promotes healthy eating habits. We discourage food and drink with high sugar content. Children are encouraged to have named water bottles handy in the classroom. Lollies and commercial soft drinks are not permitted. Home and School is a group of fantastic parents who raise money, help bring people together at fun events and encourage school spirit. Movie afternoons, a fun run, a quiz night, sausage sizzles and the annual Fair are some of the activities we organise throughout the year. Our social dinners are also an important part of our group getting to know each other and trying out the local restaurants! Come along to a meeting and see what we do and share your ideas. Keep an eye out in the newsletter for meeting dates. All parents are encouraged to join our ‘Friends of the School’ list – receiving a phone call a few times a year to help with certain tasks for events. If you have special skills or contacts please let us know. See you at our next meeting, or contact: Kathryn Easter on 388 6177, Co-Chair Home and School Committee. School starts at 8.55 am and finishes at 3.00 pm, with interval at 11.00 - 11.40 am and lunch from 1.00 to 1.40 pm. Staff are in their classrooms from 8.30 am. The school cannot take any responsibility for students in the school facilities before 8.30 am or after 3.00 pm. No child is permitted to leave the school grounds during the school day unless this has been arranged between the school and a parent, caregiver or teacher. If a child does decide to leave the school for any other reason the school will contact the parent/caregiver immediately and then the police will be informed. A notebook is kept in the school office should you notice anything that needs attention around the school buildings and grounds (see also Working Bees). We welcome parental involvement in all areas – both in the classroom and behind the scenes. Please feel free to arrange a regular time to assist in the classroom or perhaps to take part in school activities. If you wish to observe your child in the classroom, please arrange this with the teacher concerned. We welcome suggestions from parents about ways in which you feel you can assist in the children's learning, and in school life in general. The Home and School Committee meet regularly (see Home and School Group), and there are a number of other special interest groups. One of these is the gardening group - we like to keep our grounds looking great. If you are interested in joining the gardening group, please contact Kirsty Chamberlain on 977 8759. Payments can be made by cheque, cash or Internet banking. All cheques should be made out to Worser Bay School, unless otherwise advised. Alternatively, you can pay by Internet banking. Our account is held at: - Westpac Kilbirnie Please ensure the following details are entered in payee reference field: Please help us efficiently organise these valuable outside-school events by returning your permission forms or payments promptly. Boxes are on the school office counter for your permission forms for each event. We request that the children do not bring money, valuable or ’attractive‘ items to school. In cases where the child has a particular reason for wishing to bring a valued item to school, parents are asked to contact the teacher in advance. The school does not accept responsibility for loss of, or damage to, items brought to school by children. Mahutonga children and a teacher or parent supervise the crossing of roads both in the morning and the afternoon. Both crossings by the school have poor visibility, so it is important that no vehicles stop or park on the yellow lines or the driveway. Better still, why not walk to school or park further away from the school entrance and walk. The fewer cars around the school the safer it is for all of us. We encourage children to walk, bike or scooter to school. In Terms 1 and 4 children must wear a hat that shades the face, ears and neck. You can buy a smart Worser Bay School hat at the office. Please ensure that your child's hat is clearly labelled. We do have sunblock at the school office, but this is not enough sun protection alone. Swimming instruction will be held at the Kilbirnie Aquatic Centre in Term 4. Please provide a named bag to hold your child's togs, goggles, towel and remind them to bring the bag home each day. Children travel to and from the pool by bus. Watch the Newsletter and Website Calendar for confirmation of class timetables. Parents and children, with permission, may use the free phone in the office foyer to make phone calls. Our phone number is 939-7281. Term dates for the current or future school years can be found on the Ministry of Education's website. When your child starts school, we ask you to sign a consent form to enable us to walk down to the beach occasionally. Other trips connected to topics we are studying will occur throughout the year and you will receive notices about these. Your permission will be required for these trips. Permission slips are usually included in the weekly newsletters. The school relies on voluntary contributions to pay for what many of us would consider essentials but are insufficiently funded by the operations grant. Voluntary contributions per year are $250 per child or $500 per family, reduced to $200 and $400 respectively if payment is made in Term 1. We aim to have one community working bee a term. In this way we can keep on top of general maintenance and keep our school looking loved. It’s also a great opportunity to get to know other families. Watch the weekly newsletter for dates. All parents and children welcome!
